What is it and where can I get it?
That was my question and I have been a fan ever since.
Most people don’t realize that Oxytocin promotes touching and is promoted by touch. It also is the bonding agent in family ties ( mates, parents and children), it is involved in the birth process, breastfeeding and orgasm, as well, it has the ability to increase cognition and helps to repair memory.
It is a peptide secreted from the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Without estrogen it hasn’t much power, but together they do quite a marvelous thing!
Most of us first heard of it with regards to delivery in childbirth as it is the main ingredient in “the drip”. The medication used to induce labor.
However it is how we got there in the first place. Oxytocin impels us to get close to another person. It spikes when someone touches you. If you spend time in the presence of this special person, a more profound life long pattern develops. Oxytocin will surge just at the thought of him or her. Then it surges even higher when he or she arrives and jumps again at a mere touch. Forget verbal commitment if you long for this person’s touch you are chemically committed! Since women have a higher level of estrogen you can see why they tend to commit first or have a harder time letting go if things don’t work out as planned. Reflexology can help at these times as it helps balance hormones and this is important when our lives get out of balance by loosing a loved one in life or in death.
Parents are often unaware of how their touch can influence their children. It bonds them to us and us to them, it helps shape their personalities, social skills, and ability to express affection as adults.
As we age our hormones are altered, we call it menopause in women, viropause or andropause in men.
That wild and wonderful kick from oxytocin can loose its punch without ample estrogen to empower it. This is an important part of life as it allows us as parents the ability to let our children go, leave the nest so to speak, without to much heart ache.
Alcohol and lack of touch are main culprits to oxytocin, more touch more oxytocin. More alcohol less oxytocin. It is the main component in the recipe of lovemaking. It is known as “forplay.” Next time you find yourself next to your loved one, improve the bonding agent that will maintain your relationship through troubled times and prevent numerous problems… touch.
Oxytocin equals a hug and that can keep you healthy!
